Latest News

The ice is melting! The springtime and summertime water activities will soon be ongoing! I have an early safety reminder that boating and alcohol don’t mix. Every year, the news has reports of people who have had too much to drink while boating, and severe or fatal accidents follow. :( Here’s is a very good and informative public service announcement video from the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Here in New York State, where we have hundreds of small lakes, ponds, and rivers for our water recreation activities, there are laws that govern the use of watercraft. Please be aware of these laws, boat responsibly, and never drink and drive a boat. The penalties for boating while under the influence are oftentimes just as severe as drinking and driving vehicles. Know the laws and know the safety rules before going out on the water, please! Many municipalities and/or counties have boating safety courses in conjunction with boating licensing offices. The New York State Office of Parks and Recreation at http://www.nysparks.state.ny.us have loads of information about boating, boating safety, and additional resources. Other states have similar resources- a quick search on a search engine or “boating” and your state will oftentimes give you the result on the first page.

Please boat safely this year!
