Checking Out Windows 7

Frugal, Reviews

As many of you know, I am on the CUTTING EDGE of technology… :smarty:

(that’s supposed to be a joke; I am usually a very, very late bloomer and a reluctant shopper when it comes to buying new software and gadgets- I still have a TracFone cell!!)

Well, all this hoo-hah about Windows 7 has me a little curious. I missed the “free” beta version that Microsoft was giving away to developers, so I’m thinking of doing my very first upgrade when Windows 7 is released next month. I like Vista; I think it’s the best operating system to date, but I’ve had a lot of problems with my peripherals (especially my older printers) and software programs. I’ve just discovered that my computer is Windows 7 compatible. Buy.com has a page devoted to preparing for and learning about Windows 7- there’s a link to see if your PC is Vista compatible (and most Vista-compatible PCs are 7-compatible), and has other information in Windows 7. I think I love it! I’m probably going to have to get a new computer for one of the boys in the near future (we school at home and use computers like schoolbooks). If 7 is ANY speedier than Vista, I’m in.

There’s also a very, very sweet sale on electronics and computers at Buy.com these days, because everybody wants to get rid of their Vista machines to stock Windows 7 machines. This can be a GREAT time to grab a deal, because you can get a Vista-machine on sale, and then upgrade to Windows 7 for FREE later (with qualifying machines- make sure you find out before buying one). Or, you can just purchase a discounted Vista machine and then buy your own Windows 7 upgrade software and install it. Here’s a very nice price- check out this deal: an Acer Aspire X3200, Athlon 64 Dual-Core (I own the same model with a triple-core, and it’s THE most reliable computer we’ve ever had), 2.9GHz, 4GB, 640GB, DVD-Writer, nVIDIA GeForce 8200, etc etc. On sale at Buy.com for $408.99 with free shipping!! These machines are great for hefty computing- making music, videos, pdf files, and gaming (all the things my kids do). Oh yeah, AND for doing your schoolwork from time to time, right? The price is definitely right!

I love Buy.com. If you’re looking for incredible deals on electronics (or just about anything else!) you should definitely check them out. They have a weekly sales page with big discounts- don’t miss it, Frugal Hacks!
