In need of mobility equipment for you or a disabled loved one? It’s a scary world out there- the Internet abounds with all sorts of chairs, wheelchairs, handicap vans, etc. How do you know that the equipment you are getting stands up to the quality and safety standards of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration? It’s very difficult to determine, unless you are relying on QAP- Quality Assurance Program from National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA). NMEDA is a non-profit trade association that has lists of qualifying mobility equipment dealers. And they have QAP, the Quality Assurance Program which is the only nationally recognized program for the Adaptive Mobility Equipment Industry. It costs nothing to find a qualified mobility dealer in your area. I did a little searching, and see that Syracuse, NY, has a dealer.
My grandmother took care of my wheelchair-bound grandfather for almost 40 years. Wow. I give her a lot of credit- she was ALWAYS doing something. I can’t imagine all the help she needed in selecting equipment for my grandfather. It’s a good thing that professional help like NMEDA is there to assist!
If you or someone you know needs some education or help in selecting mobility equipment, check out the NMEDA site. They can connect you with a local dealer who will help you with equipment. Qualified dealers can help in other ways, too, as they are aware of other assistance, such as training or difficult-to-locate parts and accessories. Check out the site, search for a dealer near you. You may learn about some new technology, too!

Life is never dull, and exciting things just seem to always happen to me... why me... when I'm not running around the house fixing things, I'm a freelance writer for national media outlets like USAToday.com, Salon.com, and others. I've even been interviewed by TIME and The Wall Street Journal about blogging. Can you believe it?! Here is where I express my zany, creative, motherly side.
