My Kids Take Food Labels VERY Seriously. Very.

Family

Here I was, merrily blogging in my office, when I hear a rowdy commotion in the kitchen. :hmph:
It’s interrupting my “creative flow and process,” so I sweetly holler in my most motherly voice: HEY WHAT’S GOING ON OUT THERE??!!

One of the kids comes in and announces, “We’re crushing yogurt cups.”

“I hope they’re not filled,” I wryly and suspiciously remark.

He laughed. “No! We’re recycling them, and the label says to crush the cups so wildlife doesn’t get hurt.”

“What?” I ask. “The label says this?” Maybe they had too much farina this morning. And I haven’t yet had my coffee…

My other son pops in and cracks up in giggles. “What are the deer going to do, step in the cups and go squalshing all over the woods with yogurt cups on their hooves?!”

This sets both boys off and they start laughing again.

Trying to squelch the encroaching tide of silliness that threatens my blogging reverie, I moderately say, “OK, ok! Let me see! Where does it say this?!” They show me.

Silly label 2

Holy cow, it REALLY does say this. I wonder WHAT animal got stuck in one of these. I didn’t see it in the “BREAKING NEWS” headlines of the day.

After I saw it and started to laugh, my son (the cut-up who likes to perpetuate goofy jokes as long as he can, heehee) said: “Words of Christ in red! Bwahahahahaha!” They both started laughing AGAIN.

My kids are voracious readers. They read the labels to food products, often getting a great big YUKYUKYUK out of them. The kids find food labels warnings incredibly funny. Like the Gummy Treats. Look at this one.

Silly label 3

Yes, it does say: “To avoid choking, give fruit-flavored snacks only to children who can easily swallow chewy foods. Children should be seated and supervised while eating.”

:duncehat:

Wow, does THAT label scream liability protection all over it.

A few months ago, I bought a new tablecloth, and my daughter read the package labeling. She adroitly pointed out this on the label.

I guess it’s good that my kids read labels. If nothing else, it provides cheap entertainment for hours. … cuz they’re STILL yukking it up about the yogurt cups!

I noticed that same note on a some item I bought - couldn’t have been a tablecloth because I don’t use them - but I thought “Well, duh!” Yeah labels are very funny indeed check out your hair dryer LOL

I read the nutritional labels on foods all the time, but I guess I should keep an eye out for the other parts too. The table cloth one is funny. I can see someone buying the thing only to find it comes in undecorated white.

Wow. That is funny. I’ve seen some Mcdonalds or Starbucks cups say “Caution: contents may be hot.” Some people are simply funny. :shades:

Now I’m really curious, I wonder what kind of animal we’re protecting by crushing that yogurt cup?!

it cracks me up the stuff that they put on labels just because some people will stop at nothing to get a buck. I’ve seen some packaging with directions for use on them, pretty silly on some of them but I guess they have no clue how many nit wits will be buying their products and have no clue how to use them with out instruction

Actually, I’m very glad your kids are conscientious! Yoplait yogurt containers are dangerous because of their design (wide at the bottom narrow at the top).

From Nature at the Table: “The scavengers that are attracted to picnic areas occasionally suffer direct consequences from gleaning our trash. Kaplan recalls that in the mid-1990s, a number of skunks were injured due to the container design of one particular brand of yogurt. “The Yoplait yogurt container, it’s narrow at the top and wide at the bottom. The skunks would stick their head in and then they couldn’t get out.”

From Wildlife in Crisis: “Certain peanut butter jars (Peter Pan)and yogurt containers (Yoplait) pose
the greatest danger to wild animals like raccoons and skunks due to their narrow tops and wider bottoms.”

Oh I love reading this!! Reminds me of my smart-alecky son!! I’m so glad he loves to read because it provides for GREAT entertainment in so many ways. I love it when he eloquently uses a word while speaking to an adult & the adult asking what it means :)

I actually had NO IDEA about the yogurt cups posing a threat to skunks. I can’t say I’m terribly fond of skunks, especially the gazillions we have around here, but I’d hate to be the contributing factor to their suffocating demise… :cwy:

We wash our plastics, bag them, store them in a plastic bin, and send them directly to the Recycling Center. So, for us, there is no way I can think of that critters would have any access to our recyclables. But my son obviously took the label seriously- he was crushing all the yogurt cups! LOL. Thanks for leaving your comment, Dasiy- I’ll be sure to have the kids read. it. :)

As far as labels go… yes, there are some REALLY funny ones out there.. :wha:

I eat those yogurts all the time, and even though I know the nutritional info by heart… I never saw that on the label. Now that I know, the danger to wildlife seems so obvious. I feel kind of guilty for not crushing them all along.

Hi, I know food labels have become really silly in recent years. The manufacturers have to cover themselves for every liability known or unknown to man! I suppose due to the fact that the world has become litigation mad.
I recently had a bag of brazil nuts with the warning “may contain traces of nuts” on it. This morning I noticed an egg box with a contents list of one word - eggs!!
You mentioned your children laughing over a warning to protect wildlife by crushing their yoghurt pots. This is because, believe it or not, many hedgehogs are killed every year by getting their heads stuck in them . Many animals and birds are also killed getting entangled in the plastic bands which hold beer six packs together.
      Best wishes.Penny.
