Ahhhh… August… that sweatiest of all months. I have four teenagers, and I babysit four boys on top of that. Couple that with the jobs we do around here: cleaning dog kennels, such a fun job; removing turf for gardens; mowing over an acre of land; tending to other people’s yards; living in an 1855 home with NO insulation and no sufficient electrical for air conditioning.. you get the picture….. and my house is one big bastion of sweaty stinky people. Except me, of course. You know the old saying, “Horses sweat, men perspire, but ladies only glow.” Rrrrright. Let’s just say my poor washing machine is working overtime this summer. And by the smell of it, it isn’t faring too well these days.
The amazing people at Smelly Washer realized my plight, have shown me mercy, and gave me some of their product to test out. Cool!

Here’s the Nitty Gritty:
Smelly Washer promises to “eliminate the embarrassment of moldy smelling clothes, towels, and linens.” That sounds good to me! I don’t know about you, but I HATE having people visit me when the place smells like that disgusting wet-dog and mildew-carpet smell. Yick. Smelly Washer is an all-natural product that gets rid of the smell, both in the washing machine and in the clothing. It can be used to wash your machine (you add 1 tablespoon of the Smelly Washer powder to a load of hot water and soak it for a few hours or overnight), and your stinky clothing. I have been having a big problem with our towels lately- it’s so humid around here in July and August, and I cannot bleach my colored towels and washcloths; and they stink like all get-out all summer long.
Smelly Washer recommends that your wash out your washing machine first, before using it in any loads of clothing/towels. Well, I didn’t do that. Oopsie. I was too impatient and couldn’t take it anymore- I threw in the Smelly Washer with the load of towels. And they came out great! I mean- I didn’t smell anything, which is the point. That musty, mildewy smell was not there. Smelly Washer has no odor, so it’s not like a perfume or fabric softener or anything. It just gets rid of the smells. I think if you have a stinky washer and/or stinky loads of clothes, especially stuff like work clothes or wet towels, this will work for you. I definitely think it’s worth it to get some Smelly Washer to keep in your laundry cabinet, for those super-stink “emergency” moments. And I know a lot of you have small children… and we all know that small children don’t always smell like roses (especially when they have the stomach bug). :cwy:
So I’m keeping Smelly Washer on hand for those “really bad” loads, and as an intermittent washing machine cleaner. If you do two treatments a month, the bottle could last you a year. Not too shabby for just $17. And guess what? You can get 10% off your order at Smelly Washer if you use this promo code: freakyfrugalite, good until August 31, 2009. How cool is that?!
I think it’s a great product to have handy in your laundry supply room. They also have a good website/blog that has a lot of really great information about the product and laundry in general.

Sounds great to me. I need smelly drain too. Wonder if they make it. Baking soda doesn’t always do the trick.
Love your site.

My washer does smell bad even though I leave the lid open when clothes aren’t in it. I can’t figure it out, but this stuff sounds great. Thanks!

I could definitely use this stuff when I wash anything THE DOG was laying on! Especially his bedding and blankets or towels he sat on in the car. P.U.!

Well, I sure could use this! I’ve never heard of Smelly Washer before but it sounds great. I have 4 teenage boys and a 7 year old daughter. The boys ALWAYS have stinky sweaty clothes. And they leave wet towels in the bottom of the hamper. Talk about smelly! Anyway, sounds like a great contest!

I’ve seen this reviewed on other blogs and would love to try it. I hate how my towels smell even after they are washed and having to use so much soap and softner to cover up the smell.

Ummm… I forgot the laundry soaking in the washer again. Did I mentioned my washer is almost 30 years old? Yeah… I’m thinking it could use this right now. LOL I’m about to do a vinegar rinse in it, but I hate that because it makes the whole house smell like a pickle jar when it’s hot.
