Arriba! I love it when hard-working women “make it big.” Ever hear of Laura Diaz? This lady is making her way up, and up. In special honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, where we recognize “minority” individuals for their merits, contributions to American society, and successes- Laura Diaz deserves some laud. Her story will inspire you!

Laura Diaz began life as the daughter of Mexican-born farm workers, in Southern California. Laura is first-generation Mexican-American. When she was four years old, her family moved to beautiful Santa Clara, CA, and Laura’s rise to success began. Laura graduated high school and was accepted at the much-acclaimed California Polytechnic State University (it ranks #1 as Public Master’s University in the Western United States by the U.S. News & World Report‘s 2008 America’s Best Colleges List). Laura earned her Bachelor’s Degree in English. After completing her education, Laura went on to work in television news. She was quickly recognized for her professionalism and skill, and by 1997, she became the lead news anchor for KABC-TV in Los Angeles. What a stellar ride! Laura is the first female Hispanic weekday news anchor at an English language television station in LA, as well as one of the leading Hispanic television journalists in the nation. And her work has earned her seven Emmy Awards. This is a lady to watch. And she’s got heart, too- she has done a very classy video encouraging people to vote and to participate in government, and she speaks at charity events for fund-raising. This is so inspiring- to have a young girl from the “world of labor” rise up to have such success in the professional world. It is what I hope for my young children. We are not at the “top of the food chain,” so to speak (we are lower/middle-class, small-town Americans), but I have very high hopes for my kids; and, like Laura’s parents, I want my children to study hard and work hard. Laura’s story from the fruit farms of rural California to the cameras of Los Angeles is very heartening to me and my daughters. You CAN succeed if you apply yourself and work hard. Thanks, Laura, for inspiring untold kids!
