I have two kids finishing up their high school “experience.” We’re looking into colleges now. Holy cow, what a complicated, mind-boggling (and expensive!) venture! Applications, filing, collecting and sifting through oodles of paperwork… and the kids don’t even know what they want to do when they grow up yet! Me, I’m just terrified that they’ll graduate with a measly degree and a whopping $100,000 of debt on their heads. :S
Well, there’s some light at the end of the tunnel- the StudentLoanNetwork.com. It’s a pretty cool website. Not only do they have information about student loans, there are student loan blogs (I just love blogs!), information on alternative ways to get money for school (like WORKING, lol), college searches, and more.
StudentLoanNetwork.com has been around since 1998, is a member of the Edvisors, and it’s rising quickly to becoming the portal for information about student loans. StudentLoanNetwork.com says they’ve helped over 25 million students and parents with over $1 billion in scholarhsips, grants, and funding! If you’re interested in learning more, check out the website and/or sign up for the free newsletter.

I have a daughter in college—-in NYC—so we are quite familiar with student loans! Have you looked at scholarships.com?

How about getting a job?!? I graduated (after 5+ years, yes) with less than $10k in student loans. I worked myself through and appreciated it much more than my brother who got all loans and still hasn’t graduated (8 years later).
I don’t like how every one assumes that you MUST go to college in order to succeed. I think we will see less of this the more inflated the cost gets.
I’m pregnant now and hubby and I have already decided that if our kid doesn’t want to go to college they don’t HAVE to. Even though both of us have our degrees. The kid can go into a trade school or the military. I’m good with both of those options. Or maybe our kid will be the next Bill Gates.
You just never know.
I just don’t think it’s worth going into hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt…unless they’re going to become a doctor or an architect. If they’re just going to major in underwater basket weaving they may as well travel the world.
