The Needy Netbook

Having a netbook (those teeny-tiny computers- they look like shrunken laptops and work just as well) is really neat! I’m enjoying mine. I use it to read e-books online, mostly, but I can also do everything my laptop does (check email, write blog posts, surf the Net). They have games (which means I am always playing tug of war with my sons with the thing), can read pdfs and Word documents, they can do everything! I love mine- it’s tiny, it’s compact, it boots up in a minute’s notice. And the battery lasts up to 3 hours, which is SWEET.

But the worst thing about a Netbook is it doesn’t have a CD/DVD drive. :( I know, I know! If it had one, there goes the small size, the battery power, the speedy bootup! But I really do miss my DVD drive. PLUS- and I have NO IDEA why computer manufacturers do this, GAH!!- there’s no operating system disk included. You have to make your own, by burning it on a DVD. Hello? There’s no DVD drive! It’s crazy. So in order to make a recovery disk set, you HAVE to buy an external DVD drive! That stinks. Needless to say, I haven’t done it yet. My eyeballs popped out and back in again when I saw the prices of DVD drives. They are half the cost of what I paid for my netbook! Some are even more costly. Holy cow!

Well, of course the first place I’m going to go is Buy.com. :D I just love Buy.com! Not only do they have very cute commercials with Howie Mandell (I remember that guy when he had hair, ya know!), but they have excellent prices and a huge selection. Buy.com has a good stock of stuff, plus they have a lot of stuff from third-party sellers, too. The Acer external DVD drive here is mighty nice. I like the white color, it looks classy. ;)

Frugal Hacks, you should definitely check out Buy.com. They have weekly AND daily sales with deep discounts on mostly electronics stuff. But Buy.com has loads of other stuff- linens, cookware, vacuum cleaner supplies, tools, clothing, books, everything! I also keep my eyes peeled for deals on camera batteries, too- Buy.com has good prices on those.

So… I guess I’d better quit procrastinating and get one of those for my netbook. I don’t like not having a backup recovery disk set…
