The Word For Wednesday: Much Study!

Word For Wednesday

Wednesdays are big study days here at the homestead. So the Word For Wednesday always seems to creep up on me! I am reminded of this verse:

And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:

Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all.
For God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether good or evil. Ecclesiastes 12: 13-14

I like study, actually. Even my leisure time is usually spent studying something. But, yeah, sometimes the studying can be really wearisome to the flesh. I try to encourage the kids, when their flesh is feeling weary, with the second portion of my scripture verse: Fear God and keep His commandments. This is really the purpose of study! Knowing that study has a purpose (knowing God, fearing God, giving knowledge to keep His commandments) makes study a LOT less wearisome. It’s like fresh wind in the sails!

So that’s my very short and sweet TWFW. :D

This reminds me of one of my favorite old choruses:

to know Him, to know Him
is the cry of my heart
    Spirit, reveal Him to me
    To hear what He’s saying
    brings life to my bones
to know Him, to know Him alone

Fresh wind in the sails … hallelujah!

This is one of my most favorite portions in Scripture; it helps me keep focused on what is most important.

You’re right; it is like fresh wind in the sails! It goes along with what I’ve been thinking about lately. I think that as children, we get so caught up in the fact that study is wearisome, and sometimes tedious. We’d much rather be having fun out of doors, or doing similar things. Then, when we grow older, and our minds become more and more enlightened, we wished we could have paid more attention and relished our lessons more — because now we realize that what we were learning about was not just a bunch of facts and figures, but we were getting a glimpse into the order that God created — science, language, history, mathematics, music and the arts — all of those things could have given us a bigger glimpse into who God is and what He made.

No wonder Christian homeschoolers’ grades are higher than the grades of those who are taught that we evolved and that life is essentially meaningless.
