Winter is here! We finally got measurable snow, straight from Lake Ontario. The snowplows come rumbling by every hour or so (and all we got was about 3 to 4 inches). It’s so cozy in the house. I love winter. The snow is like a great big blanket on the community; it muffles all sounds and softens everything. And we, like little rabbits, are holed up in our house, cuddle together with quiet activities.
I just love winter. I feel kinda sorry for you guys in the Philippines and other tropical places- winter is cold and wearing heavy coats and boots is a big pain, but it’s so peaceful. And now that I insulated the walls of the house this summer, the place is incredibly warm. I’m looking forward to insulating the upstairs and renovating the attached garage. We’re going to make the space into a huge family/music room. I have big plans- the garage door area will be filled in, wall to ceiling, with large windows. I’m going to install one of those ventless gas logs in the room, too. I’m not fond of fireplaces (waaaay too much work, too messy, and doesn’t heat very well). A friend of mine has one of those gas logs, and the thing belches heat. They are easy to install, too. And very pretty- they look like a real fire. The logs are realistic. Of course, if you get really close, you can tell the logs are fake. But what guest is going to get too close? They’ll burn their eyebrows off. So I think I’m safe. :D They units are not expensive, either. The R. H. Peterson Real Fyre Gas Logs gas logs are very affordable at Hansen Wholesale, and some units fit into existing fireplace pits. Some also come with a mantel-type unit. I like those best, they look very classy. Ventless gas logs are better than vented gas logs, in my opinion. I did some research (the website has a good comparison page with information to make your decision). Ventless gas logs are less realistic but they provide a lot more heat, and I think they are safer. They do emit water vapor into the room, but we have not had a problem with that with our heater in the house (and the air is bone dry during the winter, anyway, so it could use some moisture). I notice that the cat doesn’t get zapped as often when I pet her.
So do you like winter? What do you like best? I am LOVING this winter! Which reminds me- time for hot cocoa! ;)

Glad to hear your house is so nice and toasty warm after the renovation. A musik room has always been a dream of mine, too. We just don’t have an extra room, so my room is kinda half my bedroom and half my musik studio. It works…for now anyway. BTW, I never thought of that before, that winter kills the bugs! I knew winter must have something good in it! :D
