Too Much Stuff

I never, ever in a million years thought I’d ever have to consider something like this: Uncle Bob’s Self Storage. Before I had kids — and even when the kids were small — we just never had a whole lot of “stuff.” Moving from apartment to apartment was easy- -just pack up the two, three boxes and away we go! LOL.

I don’t know if getting older did it, or buying a house. But we have got STUFF. The cause may also be because all the relatives, perceiving my interest in genealogy, has dumped boxes and boxes of STUFF on me. I like the old timey photographs , and the paperwork is cook…. but I have about THREE full sets of ancient china dish sets… a zillion old frosted glass sets…. old furniture that’s too rickety or too tiny to use in a houseful of boisterous kids and pets… And will someone please tell me how all those Victorians kept their furniture looking so good?! Mine has to be dumped out to the curb every couple of years. :-p

So anyway, I got lots of stuff. In perspective, I probably have less stuff than the *average* homeowner, but I think part of the problem lies with the fact that I have a small home (1600 square feet) with only a few useable closets. Our tiny attic is more like a cellulose-dust-filled hatch, and the basement floods. So we have no place to put our stuff. Which has me thinking about self storage.

I have had to get rid of most of the baby clothes (*sob*), the old toys that are now worth a fortune (*dumb me*), and books- oh, the books I’ve had to give away or throw away! The basement flooding ruined a lot of them. šŸ™

Uncle Bob’s sounds so friendly. They have locations everywhere (well, almost everywhere!). You can check for locations near you with their handy zip code search feature. Pretty cool.

How about you? Did you get a lot more STUFF this holiday season? Are you swimming in too much stuff?? Would you rather get rid of it all or use self storage?

We do a purging once a year or so. Our mantra is if it hasn’t been used in a year we get rid of it. If it’s in decent shape we give to Goodwill or to friends, neighbors etc… the rest goes to the curb. We just recently cleaned out the garage and finally have room to park one of the cars. Self-storage is great when you don’t know if you want to get rid of it but need the room… Good luck with all that!!! šŸ™‚ Happy New Year.

every time i moved i got rid of stuff. now i’m left with a box of CDs, 6 boxes of books i’m slowing giving away except for the hardback books - never will i give those away. a couple boxes of crap from the entertainment stand i got rid of as well as the sectional couch. NEVER buy a sectional couch. a box of school books. a box of stuff animals/cereal stuff still in the packages that WILL be worth something later on lol. so all in all i’ve narrowed it down pretty good. when i had the roomie i managed to cram is all in my 2 half closets and still have plenty of room left.

I’m not a saver. We have a crawl space, but I would never trust it not to flood, so nothing goes down there. Plus, there are spiders and stuff and there is no way in hell I’m going down there.

We have some things up in the attic, but again, I’m not a saver. If we don’t use it, it goes to Goodwill. We have a small house, small closets, so stuff goes when we run out of room. It has too. I would think a storage unit would be helpful if you have collections of things you would like to save.

We have a lot of storage areas so this is not a problem. I even cleaned out my file cabinets last week!

We have tons of stuff! Moe and I are like pack rats. We are not hoarders at all but we tend to keep things that we may use one day. However that day to use it never seems to come. I have been slowly going through things around the house…selling some of it, throwing some of it away and giving some of it away.

Moe has all kinds of gadgets and thankfully he keeps most of them in the basement or garage. He has a little workshop down in the basement that he loves to do his tinkering around in.

I have a lot of craft items, pictures, decor etc that I bought over the years that I don’t even like anymore. I was really into the pink and blue country decor when it was popular but now it makes me gag. LOL

I have been in the mood to organize lately so that is a good thing!
