Turkey Thawing and Other Musings…

February 1, 2011

Blabber

How long does it take a frozen turkey to thaw?? The packages always say “3 to 4 days” in the refrigerator. But after 4 days, I can still crack a hammer on that baby. It takes me about 7 to 8 days for a turkey to thaw. And that ain’t easy- you have any idea how big a space those 15-pound turkeys fill up in a refrigerator?!

So we’re getting more snow. Gee, I like snow. And the cold temperatures don’t bother me at all. But I am angry at winter. I discovered ice dams COMING THROUGH the ceiling in the garage and through the porch roof. That means roof damage, wood rot, re-plastering….. thank God I don’t have electrical in those walls. But the girls’ bedroom has this funky blue mold growing on the baseboards. 🙁 That’s a sign on moisture in the walls. I’m pretty disgusted and angry. I just hate ice dams. The repair work is monstrous and expensive. UGH! Give me spring, now, please! But then again, when spring comes, it means I will have to repair all this damage. Ugh ugh!
:bangwall:

Well, to make me feel better, I’m hoping to make a big turkey dinner tomorrow, when we get blasted by more snow. That is, IF the turkey thaws! We are getting about 4-6″ of new snow today (not very much), but tomorrow maybe 6-12″. We’ll see. These things are hard to predict.

Do you think a weather system of low pressure makes people feel low? I once knew a lady, a school teacher, who noticed that her students were always more rambunctious and miserable on days the weather was changing from a high pressure system to a low pressure system. And I read a few years ago that low pressure air has negatively-charged ions (or maybe it was positively-charged. Heck, I don’t know which!). Supposedly, our bodies are sensitive to the changes. I wonder. Because I feel pretty lousy today and there’s no reason to feel lousy (well, except the stubbornly frozen turkey, the ice in my walls, and an impending Snowpocalypse!!!).
:rollpin:

GAH!
So how’s your day today? :gah:

Oh my gosh I hope your turkey thaws for you!! We usually start ours out with one day sitting on the counter in a big pan then put it in the fridge the rest of the way, give is a little head start. I agree with the low pressure systems theory, I haven’t been feeling well and it worse today with the weather/temp change. ish. Have a great snow day or two, try to stay warm!! 🙂

  2. Beverly @ The Buzz Says:

Don’t know about pressure systems, but full moons sure wreak a lot of havoc! It’s the first of the month, so I get to sit in front of the computer all day getting our billing out. Fun stuff! But at least I can work in my sweats with no makeup and take breaks to read blogs whenever I want to! Plus it’s rainy and nasty outside and I get to stay in! Could be worse. Good luck with your turkey.

I sure hope you get your turkey thawed and cooked , get the house warmed up tomorrow and smell good! I’m having a cold and dry day today, here in the southwest its a “dry” cold and it sucks all the moisture out of everything, I can’t keep enough lotion on.

Yes, the low and high pressure changes affect me. Sometimes days in advance. I’ve been feeling this current weather change for several days.

Hope you get your cookin’ done 🙂

A frozen turkey never thaws for me in 3 or 4 days either. In the past I have put it in a cooler of water in the bathtub to thaw it quicker. It does help. However, I have heard that you can cook a turkey just fine even without thawing it. The only problem with that is you can’t get the “bags” out. But if it’s thawed enough to get the bags out, you can probably roast it even if it’s still frosty…Good luck! A big turkey dinner on a snowy day sounds fabulous!
We got 4″ of snow today, which normally is not a big deal, but there’s no where to put it. Just shoveling the walkway was a Herculean task because each shovelful had to go up and over the 3 ft snowbank. There was no where for my husband to plow the snow from the driveway to, other than all the way into the street, then he had find places to put it off the road. We’re supposed to get some more snow tonight/tomorrow, and also some ice. Don’t know how much of each, LOL!
Sorry about your ice dams…that TOTALLY stinks. 🙁 At least you have your beautiful kitchen to enjoy! Maybe go make a cup of coffee at your awesome beverage station and try to forget about the stupid ice?

CQ: good theory about the turkey. AND the weather system. I think it’s spot on. Thanks for the comment! 😀

Beverly- oh I dislike rain! I feel sorry for you. I’d rather get snow!! We’ve been plagued with rain for a few years, and I’ve had enough. Oh well, wouldn’t it be great to be able to choose our own weather? LOL Have a great evening.

  7. Rebecca Says:

Woven- I often wonder what it’s like out in the “wild” west. 😀 We hope to visit that area someday. Thanks for the turkey wishes. I hope the thing thaws, I can’t wait to eat it! LOL

  8. Rebecca Says:

Carole- ooo coffee!! Yeah that always makes me better. 😀 I’m sorry to hear about all your snow. It does get onerous when it piles up…. but we haven’t reached that point yet. Maybe if we got 4 feet it would be tough….

I’ll try to not think about the ice dams. Boy, what a bad mood they’ve put me in! Gah! MUST think about other things!

Just wanted to say that the turkey thaws much faster in a pan full of *cold* water. It CAN’T be hot, or bacteria will grow, but it usually takes 3 and sometimes even 2 days to thaw. (and you have to change the water every day)
BTW, I think winter actually makes me happy! 🙂 Opportunity to snowboard, stocked up on caffeine, just true happiness! 😀 I haven’t gotten the winter blues yet anyway…

Hi Mike. Gee, do you cook turkeys? 😉 You sound so experienced.

I love winter, I was having SO MUCH FUN until ice dams ruined everything. 🙁 🙁

  11. The Other Alice Says:

I like summer more and more.

Have been working on anti-grouchy mode all day.

It’s gonna be okay. For real. 🙂 (hearts)

  12. Rebecca Says:

Alice, you are so sweet. 😀

  13. Mike Says:

Haha! No but my Mom does! 😀
I don’t know how you stand ice dams! In my room I have this problem where the rug gets soaked in random places along the edges because of the condensation build-up from the basement walls. Every winter! So I kinda’ know what you are feeling like! 😛
